FBI background checks are governed by 28 CFR Part 20 and the National Child Protection Act. Results are returned to the requesting agency (employer, licensing board, or federal agency) rather than to the applicant. FBI Identity History Summaries (personal rap sheets) can be requested separately by the individual. An FBI check covers federal criminal records, records submitted to NCIC by all 50 states, military records, and international records where data-sharing agreements exist.

Ohio BCI and the FBI require at least one current, unexpired, government-issued photo ID that shows your name, date of birth, and a clear photograph. The name on your ID must match the name on your application exactly. Expired IDs, photocopies, and digital photos of an ID are not accepted. If your legal name has changed, bring documentation (marriage certificate or court order) connecting the two names.
