Frequently Asked Questions

What is an FBI FD-258 fingerprint card?+
The FD-258 is a standard fingerprint card used to submit ink fingerprints to the FBI for background checks. It is required for federal employment, firearms purchases, professional licensing, and other purposes. We roll all 10 fingerprints and complete the card for you.
What is the difference between Live Scan and ink fingerprinting?+
Live Scan is digital electronic fingerprinting that is transmitted directly to the FBI or Ohio BCI. Ink fingerprinting uses ink on paper cards (FD-258) that are mailed to the agency. Ohio BCI background checks for employment typically require Live Scan. Some federal agencies still require ink cards. We offer both.
Do I need fingerprinting for a healthcare job in Ohio?+
Yes. Most healthcare employers in Ohio require a background check through Ohio BCI and/or the FBI as a condition of employment. This includes nurses, home health aides, medical assistants, hospital staff, and anyone working with vulnerable populations. We provide same-day fingerprinting for healthcare workers.
How long does fingerprinting take?+
The fingerprinting appointment itself takes about 15-20 minutes. Walk-ins are welcome — no appointment needed. The background check results are processed separately by the FBI or Ohio BCI and typically take 2-7 business days, depending on the agency.
What do I need to bring for fingerprinting?+
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID) and any paperwork your employer or agency provided, such as an ORI number or authorization letter. If you are getting fingerprinted for a specific employer or license, bring their instructions so we can complete the form correctly.
Ohio Background Checks

Ohio BCI WebCheck — Everything You Need to Know

Ohio BCI (Bureau of Criminal Investigation) WebCheck is the state's electronic fingerprinting system for running criminal background checks. If you are applying for any Ohio professional license, a job at a school, healthcare facility, or childcare center — or if you work with vulnerable adults or children — you almost certainly need a BCI background check.

WebCheck uses Live Scan technology to capture your fingerprints digitally and transmit them directly to Ohio BCI and, in many cases, the FBI simultaneously. The results are sent electronically to the requesting organization — typically within 2–5 business days for state-only checks, and 5–7 business days when the FBI is included.

At Asal Multi Services, we are an authorized Ohio BCI WebCheck provider. We have the equipment, training, and ORI (Originating Agency Identifier) authorization to submit your fingerprints directly into the Ohio BCI system. You do not need to go to a police station or sheriff's office — we handle it all right here at our Columbus office.

When you come in, bring your employer's ORI number (they should provide this in your onboarding paperwork), a government-issued photo ID, and your Social Security number. The entire process takes about 15–20 minutes.

Common Reasons for Ohio BCI WebCheck

  • Teachers, aides, and school staff — required by Ohio Department of Education
  • Daycare and childcare workers — required by ODJFS
  • Home health aides and personal care workers — required by ODH
  • Nurses, CNAs, and hospital staff — required by employer and state
  • Foster and adoptive parents — required by ODJFS
  • Social workers and counselors — required for licensure
  • Real estate agents — required by Ohio Division of Real Estate
  • Security guards — required for OPOTA certification
  • Cosmetologists and barbers — required by Ohio State Cosmetology Board
  • Insurance agents — required for Ohio Department of Insurance
  • Mortgage loan originators — required by Ohio Division of Financial Institutions
  • Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians — required by Ohio Board of Pharmacy

BCI vs. FBI — What's the Difference?

BCI checks Ohio records only. FBI checks national records. Most Ohio employers require both BCI and FBI. We can submit both in a single appointment.

Ink vs. Digital

FBI Ink Cards vs. Live Scan — Which Do You Need?

The type of fingerprinting you need depends on who is requesting it and how the results need to be submitted. Here is a simple breakdown.

FBI FD-258 Ink Cards

Paper fingerprint cards — manually mailed

The FD-258 is a standard paper fingerprint card developed by the FBI. Your fingerprints are rolled in ink onto the card, which you (or we) then mail to the requesting agency. Some agencies still only accept physical ink cards — they do not have systems to receive electronic submissions.

Common Uses:

Federal employment and government contractors
Immigration petitions (certain USCIS applications)
Firearms / FFL dealer applications
International adoptions requiring FBI apostille
Out-of-state license reciprocity applications
Agencies that do not accept Live Scan

Turnaround

We complete your card same day. FBI processing after mailing: 7–10 business days.

Ohio BCI Live Scan

Digital electronic submission — fastest results

Live Scan captures your fingerprints digitally using a high-resolution scanner. The images are transmitted electronically to Ohio BCI and the FBI. There are no cards to mail — it's instant submission. Most Ohio employers, licensing boards, and government agencies now prefer or require Live Scan.

Common Uses:

All Ohio BCI WebCheck submissions
Ohio professional license applications
School and childcare employment
Healthcare worker employment checks
Foster/adoption home studies
Ohio police officer certification (OPOTA)

Turnaround

Ohio BCI results: 2–5 business days. BCI + FBI: 5–7 business days.

More Questions Answered

Everything you need to know about fingerprinting in Columbus, Ohio.

Can I walk in without an appointment?+
Yes — walk-ins are always welcome at our Columbus office at 3185 Morse Rd, Suite 15. We are open 7 days a week, 9 AM to 7 PM. You can also call ahead at (380) 269-7408 to confirm availability for your specific fingerprinting type (ink cards vs. Live Scan).
What is an ORI number and why do I need it?+
An ORI (Originating Agency Identifier) is a code your employer or licensing board gives you that tells us where to send your background check results electronically. Your employer should provide this in your onboarding paperwork. Without the ORI, we can still take your fingerprints but cannot submit them to the correct destination. If you don't have an ORI, call your employer or licensing board — they will have it on file.
How long does it take to get background check results?+
After fingerprinting, Ohio BCI processes state-only checks in approximately 2–5 business days. When both BCI and FBI results are requested, expect 5–7 business days for the FBI portion. The results are sent electronically to your employer or licensing board — not to you directly. Contact your employer if you need to confirm receipt.
What if my fingerprints are rejected or unreadable?+
Fingerprint rejection happens when prints are not clear enough for the system to process. This is more common for people who work with their hands — construction workers, healthcare workers, and others may have worn or altered prints. If your prints are rejected, the agency will typically notify you to re-submit. Come back in and we will re-roll your prints at no additional charge.
Can you do fingerprinting for immigration purposes?+
Yes. We provide FBI FD-258 ink fingerprint cards for immigration-related purposes. This includes I-131A travel document applications, certain consular processing requirements, and situations where USCIS or an embassy requires physical ink cards. Note: USCIS Application Support Centers (ASCs) handle biometrics for USCIS cases — those must be done at an official USCIS ASC. We do not replace USCIS ASCs, but we can provide ink cards for purposes outside of USCIS case biometrics.
Do you offer group or employer fingerprinting for multiple employees?+
Yes. If you are an employer, school, healthcare facility, or organization that needs multiple employees fingerprinted, call us at (380) 269-7408 to arrange group fingerprinting. We can schedule a dedicated time slot for your team to minimize wait times.
What is the difference between a background check and fingerprinting?+
Fingerprinting is the method used to identify you for a background check. Your fingerprints are unique identifiers that are matched against criminal databases. A background check is the result — the report that comes back showing your criminal history (or lack thereof). You need fingerprinting done first, and then the background check is run by the FBI or Ohio BCI using your prints.
Are your fingerprinting results accepted by Ohio employers?+
Yes. We are an authorized Ohio BCI WebCheck provider. Our Live Scan submissions are transmitted directly into the official Ohio BCI system for Ohio employers, licensing boards, and agencies that use the BCI WebCheck program. For FBI ink cards, we use official FD-258 forms prepared for federal agency review.
