Legal Requirements

ORC 4723.091 requires all applicants for nursing licensure to submit fingerprints to the Ohio BCI and FBI using the Ohio Board of Nursing ORI. The Board reviews the results and may deny licensure for crimes involving moral turpitude, patient abuse, drug diversion, or felony offenses within the preceding 10 years. CNAs registering with the Nurse Aide Registry have separate requirements under ORC 3721.121.

What to Expect

Bring a valid photo ID and your Ohio Board of Nursing ORI number. We will confirm the correct ORI code if you're unsure. Electronic fingerprint capture takes about 10 minutes. Results are transmitted directly to the Board — you don't need to pick up or mail anything.

Turnaround

BCI results: 2–5 business days. FBI results: 7–21 business days. Both go to Ohio Board of Nursing.

Cost

BCI + FBI nursing check: $67. BCI only (if FBI waiver applies): $42.

Frequently Asked Questions

I already have an Ohio nursing license. Do I need to be re-fingerprinted?

Only if you let your license lapse for more than 2 years, or if the Board specifically requests it. Routine renewal does not require new fingerprints.

What crimes disqualify a nursing license in Ohio?

Felonies, crimes of moral turpitude, offenses against patients or clients, and drug-related crimes are reviewed closely. A conviction does not automatically disqualify you — the Board evaluates each case individually, but certain crimes within the past 5–10 years are serious red flags.

Can I use WebCheck for nursing fingerprints?

WebCheck is a BCI product, so yes, electronic submission via WebCheck is acceptable. We use an approved WebCheck terminal and submit to BCI electronically.
