What This Form Is

Form I-485 is the Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status — the form you file to get your Green Card while already in the United States. It is one of the most important and complex immigration forms, often filed together with I-130, I-765, and I-131. An approved I-485 grants you lawful permanent residence (a Green Card).

Who Can File

  • Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens (spouse, unmarried children under 21, parents)
  • Family preference immigrants when a visa number is available
  • Employment-based immigrants with an approved I-140
  • Refugees and asylees adjusting to permanent residence
  • Diversity visa lottery winners
  • Special immigrant categories

Required Documents

  • Copy of passport and visa/entry stamp
  • I-94 Arrival/Departure Record
  • Birth certificate with certified translation
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Approved petition (I-130, I-140, etc.)
  • Medical exam (Form I-693, completed by USCIS civil surgeon)
  • Affidavit of Support (I-864)
  • Two passport-style photos
  • Police clearance certificates (if required)

General Eligibility

  • You have an approved or concurrently filed immigrant petition
  • An immigrant visa is immediately available
  • You are physically present in the United States
  • You were inspected and admitted or paroled into the U.S.
  • You are not inadmissible on grounds that cannot be waived

The Adjustment of Status Process
