What This Form Is

Form I-485 is the Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. This is the form you file to get your Green Card (permanent resident status) while you are already in the United States. It is one of the most important immigration forms and is often filed together with other forms like I-130, I-765, and I-131.

Who Can File

You may be eligible to file Form I-485 if:

  • You have an approved immigrant petition (I-130, I-140, etc.)
  • An immigrant visa is immediately available to you
  • You are physically present in the United States
  • You were admitted or paroled into the U.S.
  • You are eligible for adjustment under a specific category
  • You are not inadmissible or removable

The Adjustment of Status Process

  1. File Form I-485 along with supporting documents and fees
  2. Biometrics Appointment - USCIS will schedule fingerprinting
  3. Interview - Most applicants must attend an in-person interview
  4. Decision - USCIS will approve or deny your application
  5. Receive Green Card - If approved, you will receive your permanent resident card
