USCIS Form I-864

Affidavit of Support

Form I-864 — Financial sponsorship for many family-based green card cases

Document Preparation Only: Asal Multi Services is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice or representation. Services are limited to administrative form preparation and document organization per publicly available USCIS instructions.

What This Form Is

Form I-864 is the Affidavit of Support used in many family-based immigration cases. The sponsor uses this form to show financial ability to support the intending immigrant. It is commonly filed with Form I-485 adjustment of status or during National Visa Center consular processing.

I-864 preparation is detail-heavy because household size, tax records, current income, immigration status, and joint sponsor documents must match the case facts. We prepare and organize the document packet from the information you provide. We do not provide legal advice about sponsorship obligations.

Who Usually Signs

  • The petitioner who filed or will file the family petition
  • A joint sponsor when petitioner income is not enough
  • A household member using Form I-864A when their income is being counted
  • A substitute sponsor in limited qualifying situations

Documents We Review

  • Most recent federal tax return or IRS tax transcript
  • W-2s, 1099s, pay stubs, or employment letter
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence
  • Household size details and dependents
  • Joint sponsor civil and financial records if needed

Common Problems

  • Household size counted incorrectly
  • Tax return income does not match current pay evidence
  • Joint sponsor missing proof of status
  • Using gross, net, or business income inconsistently
  • Missing I-864A when household income is counted

I-864 Preparation Process

  1. 1

    Identify the sponsor structure

We determine whether the petitioner alone is preparing I-864 or whether a joint sponsor or household member packet is also needed.

  2. 2

    Review household size

Household size drives the income threshold, so we review dependents, sponsored immigrants, spouse, children, and prior sponsorship issues carefully.

  3. 3

    Organize income evidence

We group tax transcripts, returns, W-2s, pay stubs, employment letters, and business records so the financial story is easier to review.

  4. 4

    Prepare sponsor packet

We complete the form and assemble proof of status, income, tax filing, and supporting records for each sponsor.

  5. 5

Connect to the green card case

For I-485 cases, we organize I-864 with the adjustment packet. For consular cases, we prepare it for NVC-style review.
