Form N-400 is the Application for Naturalization, used by lawful permanent residents (green card holders) to become U.S. citizens. This is one of the most important steps in the immigration journey.
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for naturalization, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have been a permanent resident for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen)
- Have continuous residence in the U.S.
- Have physical presence in the U.S. for required periods
- Be able to read, write, and speak basic English
- Have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government
- Be a person of good moral character
Required Documents
- Copy of your Green Card (front and back)
- Two passport-style photos
- Proof of residence (tax returns, utility bills, etc.)
- Travel records (if you traveled outside the U.S.)
- Marriage certificate (if applicable)
- Divorce decrees (if applicable)
- Military records (if applicable)
- Court records (if you have any criminal history)

- Receive Certificate of Naturalization
