Frequently Asked Questions

What is IRS Form 2290?

IRS Form 2290 is the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) return. It is required for trucks with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that are operated on public highways. The tax year runs July 1 through June 30, and the annual deadline to file is August 31.

Who needs to file Form 2290?

Anyone who registers a heavy highway vehicle in their name with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more must file Form 2290. This includes owner-operators, small fleets, and trucking companies. Vehicles used 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) may be exempt from the tax but still must file.

When is the Form 2290 deadline?

The annual Form 2290 deadline is August 31 for vehicles first used in July. For vehicles first placed in service after July, the deadline is the last day of the month following the month of first use. For example, a truck first used in October must have Form 2290 filed by November 30.

How much does Form 2290 cost to file?

The IRS tax itself ranges from $100–$550 per vehicle depending on gross weight (55,000–75,000+ lbs). Our preparation and e-filing service fee is separate — call (380) 269-7408 for current pricing. E-filing with the IRS gets you the stamped Schedule 1 proof within minutes.

What is the stamped Schedule 1 and why do I need it?

The IRS-stamped Schedule 1 is proof that you paid your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax. You need it to register your truck with the DMV, renew your vehicle registration, and in some states to get license plates. Without it, you cannot legally operate your truck. E-filing gets the stamped Schedule 1 in minutes vs. weeks by mail.

Can you file Form 2290 for multiple trucks?

Yes. We can file Form 2290 for one truck or an entire fleet. Each vehicle's VIN is listed on the return. We also handle 2290 amendments if you need to correct a VIN or add a vehicle mid-year.
