How Asal Helps With Somalia Documents
We are a document preparation and translation service — not an attorney or embassy. We make sure every document in your packet is correct before you submit.
Certified Somali & Arabic Translation
We translate birth certificates, marriage records, civil status documents, and family letters from Somali and Arabic into certified English — accepted by USCIS, US embassies, and consulates.
Alternative Evidence Documentation
Many Somali civil records were lost or destroyed during decades of conflict. We help you build sworn affidavits, community leader letters, and other alternative evidence packages that embassies and USCIS will accept in place of missing records.
Somali Passport Application Support
We help you gather and organize the documents needed to apply for or renew a Somali passport through the Somali consulate, including birth certificates, photos, and ID verification.
Visa Photo Services
Passport and visa-standard photos taken in our Columbus office, sized to the exact specifications required for Somali consulate and US embassy applications.
What You Typically Need
Every case is different — requirements vary by visa type and individual circumstances. We review your specific documents when you come in.
- 1Valid Somali or US passport (or travel document)
- 2Certified birth certificate in English (we translate from Somali or Arabic)
- 3Proof of relationship for family travel (translated marriage certificate, birth records)
- 4Passport-style photos (2x2 inches, white background)
- 5Proof of US residence or immigration status if applicable
- 6Invitation or support letter from family in Somalia (we help draft)
- 7Financial statements showing ability to fund travel
Missing Civil Records After the Civil War
Somalia's civil registration system collapsed during the civil war and has only partially recovered. Many Somali-Americans were born in refugee camps in Kenya, Ethiopia, or Djibouti and have no formal Somali birth certificate. Others lost documents during displacement. We have extensive experience helping clients document their status using alternative evidence — affidavits from family elders, clan/community letters, school records, and religious documents. These packages, when prepared correctly, are routinely accepted by US agencies and embassies.
