Who We Serve

Columbus, Ohio is home to one of the largest South Sudanese communities in the United States. Many South Sudanese residents arrived as refugees from the Lost Boys program and subsequent waves of resettlement. South Sudanese immigration cases are among the most challenging because South Sudan's civil registration system is still very young — the country only became independent in 2011 — and many people were born before any formal registration existed.

What We Help With in Columbus

We are a document preparation and translation service — not an attorney or embassy. We make sure every document in your packet is complete, accurate, and correctly formatted before you submit.

South Sudanese Alternative Evidence Packages

When formal civil records do not exist (which is common for those born before 2011), we help build USCIS-accepted evidence packages using community elder letters, church records, refugee documentation, and sworn family affidavits.

Refugee Documentation & Travel Document Help

Many South Sudanese community members travel on US Refugee Travel Documents. We help with the supporting documents for I-131A applications to obtain or renew travel documents.

Document Organization for Resettlement Follow-Up

Many South Sudanese clients need to update their immigration records after resettlement — address changes, status adjustments, or family petitions. We help gather and organize the required documents.

Passport Photos

Standard passport and visa photos taken to meet US and South Sudanese embassy specifications.

Documents You Typically Need

Every case is different — but these are the documents most commonly required for south sudan visa applications. We review your specific situation when you come in.

  • 1South Sudanese passport (if available — issued since 2011)
  • 2UNHCR refugee registration documentation
  • 3US refugee or asylee documents (I-94, I-571, approval notice)
  • 4Church baptism or birth records (most common secondary evidence)
  • 5School enrollment or attendance records
  • 6Sworn affidavits from parents, relatives, or community elders
  • 7Tribal or clan leadership letters confirming identity and family relationships
What Trips People Up

No Birth Certificate — Because None Existed

South Sudan's civil registration system only began operating in 2011 when the country gained independence. Many South Sudanese people born before that — including adults who arrived as refugees in the 1990s and 2000s — were never formally registered. This is not negligence; the registration system simply did not exist in most areas. USCIS has clear guidance for handling these cases, and we know how to prepare the correct alternative evidence. Church baptism records (the Catholic and Presbyterian churches have kept records in South Sudan for decades), UNHCR registration cards, school records, and sworn family affidavits together form a solid evidentiary foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions — South Sudan Visa in Columbus

Can I get a South Sudanese birth certificate if I was born in a refugee camp?+
People born in refugee camps in Kenya, Ethiopia, or Uganda were not registered in South Sudan's civil system. You would need to request a birth certificate from the country where you were actually born, or use alternative evidence for US applications. We help you figure out which approach is right for your situation.
How can I petition for my family in South Sudan if they have no documents?+
This is the most common challenge for South Sudanese family petitions. USCIS Form I-130 allows for alternative evidence when primary records don't exist. We help you prepare sworn affidavits from the petitioner, relationship evidence through photos and communication records, and country condition documentation explaining why formal records are unavailable in South Sudan.
My parents are elderly and want to visit me in Columbus. They have South Sudanese passports but no other documents. Can they get a US visa?+
US B-2 tourist visas are difficult for South Sudanese nationals because the approval rate is low and strong ties-to-home evidence is required. We help prepare the strongest possible supporting package — financial records, property ownership, evidence of family in South Sudan — but we are honest: we prepare documents, we do not make visa approval decisions.
Does Asal help South Sudanese community members with TPS applications?+
Yes. South Sudan has active TPS designation for eligible nationals. TPS applications and renewals require identity documentation that we help organize, translate where needed, and assemble into a complete USCIS filing package.
